Hospital Discharge Support in Sydney: Getting Home Is Only the Beginning

If you or your parent is coming home from hospital in Sydney, getting through the front door is often the easy part.

Who is picking them up?

Has the prescription been filled?

Is there food at home?

Do they understand their discharge instructions?

Who is staying that first night?

And what happens tomorrow?

For families who live interstate or overseas, or simply can’t drop everything when a parent is discharged, those practical details can become a problem very quickly.

That’s where I come in.

I’m Jane, founder of The Gentle PA. I provide private, non-clinical hospital discharge and recovery support across Sydney.

I can collect you or your parent from hospital, get them home, collect medication, pick up groceries, help get the house organised and stay while they settle back in.

And if a few hours isn’t enough, I can keep helping over the following days or weeks.

Hospital discharge transport in Sydney
A hospital discharge isn’t always as simple as booking a taxi or Uber.

After surgery, sedation or a hospital stay, you may need someone to collect you personally and make sure you get home.

For day surgery in NSW, patients are generally required to arrange someone to take them home after surgery. Depending on the procedure and hospital instructions, they may also need a responsible adult to remain with them afterwards.

My hospital discharge service can include:

collecting you from the hospital or day surgery
driving you home
collecting prescriptions from the pharmacy
picking up groceries or anything needed at home
helping you get comfortably settled
checking that discharge paperwork and belongings have come home with you
staying with you for the agreed period
updating family, with your permission
It’s practical help from hospital door to home.

Day surgery discharge support in Sydney
Day procedures can create an awkward problem, particularly for people who live alone.

You may be perfectly independent normally, but hospital instructions can require someone to collect you after an anaesthetic or sedation.

Your daughter might be in Melbourne.

Your son might be in London.

Your friends may be working.

Or you may simply prefer to arrange someone rather than ask friends for a favour.

I can be booked to collect you after day surgery and take you home, with additional support arranged if required.

That might mean a straightforward hospital-to-home service.

Or it might mean staying for the afternoon, evening or overnight, depending on what your hospital has told you is required and what support you would like.

Help for an elderly parent coming home from hospital
This is where hospital discharge can become more complicated.

Mum was managing perfectly well before she went into hospital.

Now she’s coming home.

She may be tired. Moving more slowly. There may be new medications, appointments to organise or instructions to remember.

The fridge may need filling.

Laundry has piled up.

The GP needs to be booked.

A prescription needs collecting.

And you’re trying to manage all of it from another city or another country.

I can step into that gap.

Not as a replacement for your parent’s doctors, nurses or clinical care.

As the person on the ground who can deal with the practical side of coming home.

Hospital discharge support for families overseas
If your parents live in Sydney and you live overseas, a hospital admission has a particular way of making the distance feel enormous.

You can speak to Mum on the phone.

You can talk to the hospital.

But you can’t physically be at the pharmacy, check what’s in her fridge or drive her to the follow-up appointment next Tuesday.

I can.

With your parent’s permission, I can also keep you updated so you know what has actually been sorted.

For families in London, Singapore, Hong Kong, New York or elsewhere, that can mean having one person in Sydney who knows what is going on rather than trying to coordinate everything remotely.

What happens after the first 24 hours?
Sometimes the hospital pickup is all that’s needed.

Sometimes it becomes obvious that the first few days at home are going to need more organisation.

I can continue supporting someone for several days or for the first few weeks after discharge.

That can include things like:

appointments and transport

groceries and pharmacy runs

help getting the house back in order

meal organisation

paperwork and practical admin

family updates

getting out for coffee or lunch when they’re ready

organising other services where needed

being there for follow-up appointments and taking notes

The support changes as the person gets back into their normal life.

Is The Gentle PA a nursing service?
No.

The Gentle PA provides private, non-clinical practical support.

Medical decisions, wound care, medication administration and other clinical needs remain with the appropriate doctor, nurse, pharmacist or allied health professional.

If clinical care is required, I work alongside the healthcare professionals involved rather than trying to replace them.

My job is the real-life bit around it.

Which Sydney hospitals can I collect from?
Hospital discharge support can be arranged across Sydney, including the Eastern Suburbs, CBD, Inner West, Lower North Shore and surrounding areas.

This can include discharge from hospitals such as:

St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney

St Vincent’s Private Hospital Sydney

Prince of Wales Hospital

Prince of Wales Private Hospital

The Royal Hospital for Women

Sydney Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital

Royal Prince Alfred Hospital

Royal North Shore Hospital

North Shore Private Hospital

The Mater Hospital Sydney

and other Sydney hospitals and day surgery centres.

Longer-distance collections can also be discussed.

Who is this service for?
It works particularly well for:

people who live alone

older people returning home after hospital

people having day surgery who need someone to collect them

families who live interstate or overseas

busy adult children who can’t personally manage a parent’s discharge

people who would simply rather arrange private help than impose on friends

It can be a one-off hospital pickup or the beginning of a longer period of practical support.

A more personal way to get home from hospital
Before starting The Gentle PA, I spent more than a decade working internationally with Qantas, including First and Business Class.

The useful part of that experience wasn’t pouring champagne at 35,000 feet.

It was learning to notice what someone needed, deal with the details and make complicated days easier.

That’s essentially what I do now, only on the ground in Sydney.

No uniform.

No agency shuffle.

No clinical feel.

Just very good practical help when you need another pair of hands and a switched-on person to deal with what needs doing.
